Used Car Guarantees

By law used car dealers are not required to give buyers a used car guarantee. The FTC's Used Car Rule, however, forces retailers to place a Buyers Guide on the window of each vehicle they present on the car lot for sale.

The window sticker will display the used car guarantees the dealer is willing to offer such as what percentage of the repair charges they will cover under the guarantee; if the automobile is being offered "as is" or with additional guarantees. A few dealers have a Return Policy. If you purchase a vehicle from a dealer that has a Money Back Used Car Guarantee make sure this policy is in writing.

It is often a good idea to purchase an extended repair or maintenance contract. Similar to a guarantee, these contracts cover repairs and/or maintenance for a set time frame. Most dealers offer these policies but you can also buy directly from the warranty provider. The amount of coverage these contracts offer varies by the price of the contract. You can purchase from a Bumper to Bumper policy to a policy that just covers the motor. Additionally some policies offer payment for supplementary costs, for example towing and transportation fees while your vehicle is being repaired. Others cover routine oil changes and scheduled upkeep, such as rotating the tires and replacing the wiper blades. In addition many used cars are still under factory warranty. Often you can find many of these vehicle online via a Used Car Search Engine.

Bottom line, if it's not in writing there are no used car guarantees. If your sales person tells you it's covered ask them to put it in writing.
